Fanu's remix of DJ Shadow's "Scale It Back". This was done for the official DJ Shadow remix competition. I tried to go for a somewhat ethereal, smokey trip-hop vibe...longing for the otherness. 6. Fanu presents: All-Fanu Mix Volume 8

Fanu presents: All-Fanu Mix Volume 8

BOOKINGS: [email protected] I'm proud to present All-Fanu Mix Volume 8 to all drum-and-bass-loving ladies and gentlemen out there. This is a selection of only my own productions from the past few years. This is what drum and bass is to me: chopped-up breaks and jungle, borderlining more modern shades of bass music, taking influences from contemporary styles such as footwork and juke. When I was cutting my teeth as an artist breaking into the drum and bass scene a decade ago, doing these mixes gained my style some attention (it wasn't even called bass music back then!), and I thought it might be nice to do one again to show especially those new to the Fanu sound where it is currently. To those into the sound I'm happy to tell you that at the moment I'm working on another full-length album in the vein of styles heard in this mix. Most of these songs have been released on my own imprint Lightless Recordings, which is the home of my music. The followers of my music have always been the promotional driving force behind me, so once again, if this is something you like, I'd kindly ask you to share this mix. You can freely download it from Soundcloud, so please share the link to this mix. And if you like rap, hey, we got Blu and Raw Poetic on board. Old school, new school, true school – call it what you want. This is the school of hip hop as it used to be and how it still is for many. This is underground Helsinki sound. If this is your thing, see the two other FatGyver releases on Fanu Bandcamp. Art by Mathias Masson.

8. Two Fingers (Amon Tobin): "101 South" (Fanu's Lightless remix) [DOWNLOAD]

Two Fingers (Amon Tobin):

Ladies and gentlemen, let me present to you my remix for Amon Tobin. Anyone who knows Amon Tobin knows he's fucking insane with his drums – and with his everything. One of the true electronic masterminds of our time. And anyone who knows me knows I'm into drums. I think that's the reason why I've always been drawn into his music so much: he's constantly re-inventing himself, even with his beats. I suppose that's what we both have always been into. We connected for the first time when Amon was asking me for some of my early releases for DJ use, and that blew me away. Years later, I was honored for being asked to do a remix of Journeyman for the massive box set on Ninja Tune, and some time after that, I was listening to Stunt Rhythms, and the thought hit me again that I'd love to go in on one of those tunes. I was working on my now soon-to-be-released FatGyver hip hop works in early 2013 and asked Amon if I could do a hip hop remix of 101 South. I got the samples, but for some reason, that remix never really picked up, but I kept the samples. This summer, I went to the countryside, and the weather was just being pretty bad. The inspiration can really hit you when you're in the nature, so I wrote this one in a few good sittings. Getting to remix one of your musical heroes is a massive honor. I’m grateful to Amon and Ninja Tune for the opportunity – and all the inspiration they’ve provided me with. I’m not very good with words, so I’ll just let the music do the rest of the talking. I hope you like it. Original 101 South by Amon Tobin. Open calm is then fractured by a launch into a full scale celebration of skittering breaks and tonal hand drums. Fanu sculpts breakbeat phrases so fluid in movement, exciting in the dance, with the occasional punctuation of heavy hip hop rhythms and an underlayer of a deep morphing bassline adding a delightful contrasting weight.

"Ohh yessssssssssss. Love this (what ever style of music this is !!!)" -Laurent Garnier Fanu returns to the dark, mystical vibes he has always mastered. In every genre, there are tracks that come and go as well as those that will make an impact on the genre for years to come, paving a new path for new stylistical innovations. 'Paracosm' falls into the latter category with its massive explosive soundwall of percussion certainly never heard before in the 170 bpm realm. Regardless of the genre or tempo, Fanu's works have always been exploring the drums and a certain otherworldly atmosphere, and Lightless006 doesn't make an exception, either, as the flipside, catering for the slowfast heads, with its carefully-crafted percussion at 80 bpm and Asian atmospheres also proves. Few artists carry in their works a vibe similar to early Photek, but it can clearly be heard in Fanu tracks once again. As Do Androids Dance put it: "Fanu has done everything from drum & bass to broken beat, but he steps back up for his Lightless imprint to dive head-first into the hypnotic, deep sound of dnb, which is more about intense vibes that insane breakbeats. Fanu can do both, but sometimes you need to just throw on a hoodie and nod your head ’til your neck complains."

19. We Don't Do Neurofunk

We Don't Do Neurofunk

https://fanu.bandcamp.com/album/bristol-helsinki-ep "Bristol–Helsinki EP" is a collaboration between Bristol's Coleco and Helsinki-based Fanu. Both have a focus on pushing the rhythmically unique, Coleco via his halfstep and footwork influenced productions plus his Inflect label, website and club nights, and Fanu via a rich history of beatsmithery within jungle and its darker and more breakbeat-rhythm-led cousin drumfunk.  Following on from a recent mission statement by Fanu to bring the artistry of breakbeats back to drum and bass, this EP showcases the joy of chopping and rearranging specially hunted breaks, never before seen in drum and bass, including one, for example, from a special Finnish funk 7". It features four tunes that turn away from repeating loops and focus instead on rhythms twisting and evolving uniquely from start to finish in journeys that build to ecstatic crescendos. The 4-track EP begins on "Inward Tripper", the most meditative of the four, a half-step hallucinogenic wandering through a multitude of organic rhythmic elements and evocative melody slicings that stutter like fractal patterns in and out of attention, held down by a warm, warbling bassline. The EP then moves into more forceful and erratic territory. "We Don't Do Neurofunk" makes the statement in its title but follows by example with a deliciously light and funky break, rolling and shifting in a moving landscape. The beat is accentuated and pedestaled by a doomy and boomy detuned bass that builds to an aggressive growl as the beats jerk, contort and thrust their way to climax. Beginning with the frantic, clanging rides of the "Tighten Up" break amongst frenzied vocal wails, "Triple X" is an exercise in sampledelic dread. The drums speak directly to the body as brutal kicks and a fury of hand drums tell a dynamic tale, moving energetically through eery horror soundscapes. Finally "Mental Traffic Light" ends the lot on a colourful sci-fi synth line, contorted on a roller coaster journey of jerking beats that has chattering off beat hi hats, clanging monster rides and jabbing snares stuttering through. It ends on a stop-start teasing that perfectly demonstrates the beauty of how the suspense, sustain and release of a well engineered rhythm triggers listeners' cerebral reward centers as well as – if not better than – any drug. ・Art by Coleco ・Words by Lorna Smith of Inflect Bristol (http://www.inflect.co.uk)
